WildCats Drop Contest to #18 Roanoke

SALEM, VA – The Randolph College men's lacrosse team played the number-18 in the country, Roanoke College, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game on Saturday.  The Maroons used an early run to help defeat the WildCats 23-7.

The 18th-ranked Maroons came out strong against the WildCats, scoring on their first two possessions of the game.  However, the WildCats answered.  Prince Charles won the faceoff after the ball entered the attacking third.  A slashing penalty saw the 'Cats earn a man-up, and the deficit would soon be cut in half.  Ryan Campbell found Mitch MacDonald on the right side, and MacDonald ripped it home for the goal.  But Roanoke came right back with a big run that lasted the remainder of the period.  Despite four saves by Matt Lindenbaum, and caused turnovers by Campbell, Christian Shanley, and Lindenbaum, the Maroons were able to take an 8-1 lead into the second.

Roanoke tallied on its first possession of the second period, but the WildCats responded shortly after.  After a successful clear, it was MacDonald's responsibility to find the scorer.  He hit Brett Pausic with a pass and Pausic sent his shot into the back of the net.

Lindenbaum stepped up big shortly after, forcing a turnover and saving two shots.  But the hosts were able to add two more goals shortly after.  Campbell stopped the run, racing down the field after a save by Lindenbaum, putting the score at 11-3.  However, the Maroons ended the half with two additional tallies, going into the break with a 13-3 lead.

The hosts continued their run to start the third period.  Despite turnovers being caused by Campbell, McKinzie Garnett, Jacob Galenski, and Spencer Matthews, the Maroons built their lead to 19-3.  The WildCats had several opportunities to score but could not find the back of the net until the end of the third.  This time, Pausic found MacDonald, who ripped home his second of the game.

MacDonald kept it going in the fourth, sending one into the back of the net early to bring the score to 19-5.  The Maroons came back with two goals, but Shane Soghomonian ended the run with a low rip into the back of the net.  Graham Southwick added a late goal as well.  He caught a pass from MacDonald on the man-advantage, and sent the shot home.  However, the Maroons sealed the 23-7 victory.

Lindenbaum and James Stumpo combined to make 14 saves for Randolph.  Matthews caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls in the game, while Southwick had a team-high three.  MacDonald led the way offensively, finishing the day with five points, which set a new career-high.  Kevin Jackson and Mikey Booth each notched a hat trick for Roanoke (7-1 overall, 3-0 ODAC).

Randolph (3-6, 0-3) will be off for the next week, with its next game on the road at Hampden-Sydney College (8-3, 2-1).  The ODAC game will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m.
