FERRUM, Va. – Despite a surge in the third quarter, the Randolph College men's lacrosse team ultimately fell, 15-9, to host Ferrum College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday evening.
Although the Panthers grabbed an early 3-0 lead, the WildCats would finally land on the scoreboard at the 6:14 mark in the opening quarter as Sean Landis (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) found the back of the net off a feed from Gage Tutko (Manassas, Va./Osbourn). Ferrum added to its lead with 3:40 remaining in the period but just six seconds later, Prince Charles (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) quickly won the face-off to toss the ball to Brett Pausic (Saluda, Va./Christchurch), who recorded his first goal of the night, trimming the deficit to 4-2. However, the Panthers managed to secure two more goals for a 6-2 margin heading into the second period.
The second stanza saw both teams collect three goals apiece. Pausic landed the WildCats first goal with 10:28 on the clock, thanks to a feed by Matthew Piascik (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal School), before scoring four seconds later to make it a 7-4 game. With just over two minutes before halftime, Ferrum capitalized on a man-up opportunity to increase its lead to 9-4 before Charles added a last second goal for Randolph to cut the deficit to 9-5 at intermission.
The third quarter was a turning point for the WildCats. An early goal by Charles had Randolph trailing, 9-6. Although Ferrum responded with its own goal shortly after, the WildCats gained momentum with three consecutive goals, two of which came from Pausic. The senior added his third goal of the game at the 12:11 mark before assisting Tyler Johnson (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) less than minute later for a 10-8 margin. Despite Randolph being a man-down, Pausic once again connected with the back of the net, this time off a feed from Jace Cornell (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland), to rope the score to 10-9, which would be the closest the WildCats would get the entire game.
Despite the comeback, Ferrum managed to close out the quarter with back-to-back goals for a 12-9 edge. The Panthers extended their lead further in the fourth period, outscoring the WildCats 3-0, to secure the final 15-9 triumph.
In spite of the loss, Randolph won 19-of-28 face-offs and was successful on all 13 of their clear attempts.
In addition to his five goals and one assist, Pausic fired off 11 shots with nine on target and caused two turnovers. Charles launched eight shots in the game with four on goal while also collecting 10 ground balls and winning 18-of-22 face-offs, which ranks second in the single game record books. Landis recorded three shots in the loss while Evan Pausic (Saluda, Va./Christchurch) picked up four ground balls.
The WildCats fall to 3-11, 0-7 ODAC and next play on Saturday, April 20 when they travel to Bridgewater College for a 4 p.m. conference game.
