LYNCHBURG, Va.- The conditions were not ideal but the game went on as the Randolph men's soccer team hosted Hood on Wednesday night at a rainy and damp WIldCat Stadium. The WildCats got out to an early lead and were able to hold off the visiting Blazers with a 3-1 victory. The win puts Randolph's overall record at 2-1 while Hood falls to 1-2.
Frankie DiOrio (Bristow, Va./Patriot) scored twice for Randolph on the night. He got the scoring going early in the first half on an assist from Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville). Jonathon Powell (Fort Defiance, Va./Fort Defiance) scored late in the period with a helper from Niles Brown (Reno, Nev./Coral Academy) to give the WildCats a 2-0 lead at the half.
The score remained at 2-0 for most of the second frame. Hood was finally able to break through in the 78th minute on a shot by Colin Wise that snuck past WildCats goalie Austin Collier (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory). It would be the only blemish on the evening for Collier. DiOrio tallied his second score in the 85th minute on a pass from Gabe Krueger (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak).
Collier stopped five shots in the game. Hood goalkeeper Danny Castillo had eight saves for the Blazers.
Randolph led in total shots 16-12. Corner kicks favored the visitors 9-7.
The Wildcats go back on the road this Saturday with a touch matchup. Randolph takes on #6 Franklin and Marshall at Washington and Lee's Watt Field. It will be the second ever contest between the two schools and the first since the Diplomats won 3-1 in 2015 in Lancaster, Pa. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
