LYNCHBURG, Va.- Washington and Lee scored three times in the first half as it defeated Randolph men's soccer 4-1 in the second semifinal of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Generals advance to play host Lynchburg in the championship on Sunday.
With temperatures hovering near 50 degrees, it was a cold and brisk start to the contest. The Wildcats played tough defense in the first 17:42 of the first half with a blocked W&L shot and four saves by starting goalkeeper Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth). The Generals were finally able to sneak one through as Will Hamryka got one past Cortez-Martinez at the 22nd minute mark to put W&L up 1-0. It was 2-0 1:47 later as Hamryka assisted Oliver Dolberg on the goal.
The Generals scored again in the 35th minute to increase its lead to 3-0. Washington and Lee would outshoot the WildCats 10-2 in the frame.
Austin Collier (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) came in to begin the second half as goalkeeper for the 'Cats. The Generals added their fourth goal of the game at 53:40.
Despite the deficit, the WildCats would not be deterred as they continued to push into the General's zone. Randolph finally got on the board as Barun Tamang's(Charlottesville, Va,.Charlottesville) corner kick connected with Cristian Irigoyen (Norfolf, Va./Granby) at 64:39.
Randolph had seven corner kicks for the remainder of the game but could not capitalize on the opportunities. The WildCats did outshoot the Generals 13-7 in the half.
Overall, shots favored Washington and Lee 17-15. Randolph did dominate in corner kicks 17-15. Cortez-Martinez finished with five saves while Collier picked up four saves.
Randolph concludes its season with a final record of 10-9.
