Men's Track and Field Performs Well at WildCat Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Several school records fell as the Randolph College men's track and field team hosted its third annual WildCat Invitational this weekend.

The meet served as a final tune-up for the 2018 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship, held next weekend at Bridgewater College from Friday-Saturday, April 20-21.  

The WildCats had a strong showing in both the field and running events, recording new personal bests and school records. Friday kicked off with a new hammer throw record as Trent Lawhorne (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) threw a mark of 30.46m to earn fifth overall.

Lawhorne returned on Saturday to earn fourth-place in the discus event with a mark of 32.85. Mitchell Doss (Hurt, Va./Gretna) tossed a mark of 12.01m in the shot put, which was good enough for third before earning a throw of 28.82m in the discus.

Christopher Greene (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) earned back-to-back second-place finishes for Randolph in the jumping events as the sophomore earned a mark of 6.26m in the long jump and a 13.34m mark in the triple jump. Devon Davis (Galax, Va./Galax) would represent the WildCats in the high jump, finishing the day a height of 1.77m.

Davis returned to earn the best mark for Randolph in the javelin, tossing 41.68m while Evan Templeton finished sixth overall in pole vault with a height of 3.80m.

DJ Petty (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) turned in a first-place performance in the 110 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 14.80 before returning to complete the 100 meter dash in a school record time of 11.07, earning second-place overall. Karim Frazier (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) recorded the fastest Randolph time in the 400 meter run, crossing the finish line in 53.14.

In the distance events, Caleb Schmitzer (Wilson, N.C./Fike) clocked in a personal best time of 4:26.98 seconds in the 1500 meter run while teammate Jermayne Waller (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) followed in 4:52.87. Kieran Saienni (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) represented the WildCats in the 800 meter run and locked down a time of 2:21.52.
