Randolph Vaults to Top of Region after SBC IHSA

SWEET BRIAR, VA – The Randolph College equestrian team began its last weekend of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 4 Region 2 action on Saturday at the Sweet Briar IHSA.  The WildCats finished as Reserve Champions, second to host Sweet Briar College, tallying 40 points.  The 40 points combined with Bridgewater College scoring 25, pushed the 'Cats to the top spot in the region, with 271 (BC is second with 264).

The day started off especially well, with Morgan Hoke riding in the Open flat.  She was perfect in her section and picked up a blue.  She came back out in a very tough group in the Open fences and was nearly as good.  She left the ring with a red ribbon.  However, she was bested by her teammate, Eliza Gretok, in the other section.  Gretok was outstanding and won the blue ribbon, giving the WildCats seven more points.

Intermediate fences featured only one 'Cat, Madeline Davis.  She continued the strong day, pulling in a white ribbon and three points.  The Novice fences followed, as Caroline Houston and Katelin Kukura entered the saddle for Randolph.  Kukura competed first and had a great ride, taking second in her section.  It also helped the WildCats out by knocking down a rider from Bridgewater.  Houston was even better in her section, notching a nearly perfect ride.  The judge saw it that way, and awarded her the blue and the seven points.

Intermediate flat was up next, and Davis and Gretok were both picked to ride.  The two controlled their horses very well and came away with a yellow and red ribbon, respectively.  It was especially tough for Gretok due to heavy rain at the time.  One horse was spooked, and the section was extended as that rider was given a new horse.  However, it did not matter.  With that second-place showing, Gretok tied Hoke for Reserve High Point Rider.  However, Hoke won the tiebreaker, and was crowned Reserve High Point Rider on the day.

Britnee Kratochvil and Michelle Smith were up next in the Novice flat.  The two kept the 'Cats near the top.  Kratochvil took a difficult horse to a fifth-place finish and pink ribbon with a solid ride.  Smith then pulled in five points and a red ribbon after she showed very well.

Maya Wheeler saddled up in the Walk/Trot/Canter and was given one of the toughest horses of the day.  However, she kept the streak going of every Randolph rider ribboning, as she earned a pink.  Rebecca Jones then ended the day in Walk/Trot.  She ended the day perfectly, like her teammate Hoke started it, and earned the fourth blue of the day, sealing the 40 points and Reserve Champion designation.

Randolph will finish up region action tomorrow at the UVA IHSA.  The region comes down to Bridgewater and Randolph, just as last year did, as the 'Cats will head into the smaller show with the seven-point advantage.
