Chaney Throws Gem as WildCats Split DH with Roanoke
SALEM, VA – The Randolph College softball team made it an eight-game winning streak, after defeating Roanoke College in game one of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader on Wednesday. The WildCats won game one 1-0 on the heels of a stellar performance by Lindsey Chaney. However, the 'Cats dropped game two 15-2, seeing the win streak come to an end.
The first inning was scoreless for both teams, as both pitchers worked around singles. However, the WildCats got on the board in the second inning. Lauren Morris and Becca Montgomery began things with back-to-back singles. Sarah Reed then pinch-ran for Morris, and raced around to touch the plate on Dianne Davis' double to left center. However, the 'Cats could not add a tally, as the Maroons ended it with a double-play.
Chaney set the side down in order in the second, and Randolph followed with a one-out rally. Jordyn Knapp and Hunter Glavé hit singles, but the inning was ended with another double-play. It would be Chaney's chance to get out of trouble in the bottom half of the third. Brooke Mason led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Chaney then forced two pop-ups, ending the inning.
Pitching continued to be the main story throughout the remainder of the game, as any time the WildCats threatened, Roanoke starter Teresa Wagner got out of the jam. Chaney was even more effective. She gave up a solitary single in the fourth, before setting the side down in order in the fifth, which included two strikeouts. Chaney gave up a leadoff single in the sixth, and the runner was on third with two outs. But Chaney forced a fly-out to end the trouble. She then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to complete the shutout.
The WildCats took an early lead to start the nightcap. Kate Hodgkiss led off with a single and advanced to second after Knapp reached on an error. The bases were loaded as Glavé was hit by a pitch. Morris drove in Hodgkiss with a groundout. Davis loaded the bases again, as she was hit as well. Then, Brittany Campbell drove in Knapp with a sacrifice fly to put the score at 2-0.
The Maroons answered in the top of the first, tallying a run. However, Davis did throw out a runner during that inning. But Roanoke exploded for 10 runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. The Maroons added four more runs over the next two innings to complete the scoring, as the game ended in five innings. The WildCats put runners in scoring position, but could not get one across the plate.
Hodgkiss finished the day with three hits.
Randolph (14-6 overall, 1-1 ODAC) will continue its road trip this weekend. The WildCats begin the trek with a twin-bill at Virginia Wesleyan College (21-1, 2-0) on Saturday. The first game with the third-ranked team in the country begins at 1 p.m.
