Softball Begins ODAC Tourney on Friday as Eight-Seed

LYNCHBURG, VA – After finishing off the regular season with a two-game sweep last Friday, the Randolph College softball team will begin its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament run this Friday.  The team will head to the James Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, VA for the three-day tournament.

With that sweep, the WildCats (24-16 overall, 9-11 ODAC) locked up the eight-seed.  Waiting for them in the first game of the tournament will be the number-one seed, as well as the top-ranked team in the country, Virginia Wesleyan College (39-1, 20-0).  The noon game on Field One should be a great one, as it is a rematch from a very tight doubleheader earlier this year.  The 'Cats took on the Marlins in late March, and Lindsey Chaney and Hanna Hull had an impressive duel.  Both pitchers threw six strong innings, but VWC was able to earn the 2-1 win.  However, Randolph was one of only four teams to score an earned run on Hull in 129 innings.  Another great duel should be in the cards.

The pitching will have to be strong, as some of the top hitters in the ODAC will be in both dugouts.  Cassetty Howerin leads the ODAC in batting average, as she hit .471 this year.  However, Lauren Morris is close behind, sitting in fourth with a .446 average.  Kate Hodgkiss is also in the top-10, hitting .425 in her maiden campaign.

Another key battle will occur on the base paths.  Virginia Wesleyan has three of the top-seven in the ODAC in terms of stolen bases, including the top-runner, Kiersten Richardson.  However, Randolph boasts one of the best catchers in terms of throwing out runners, as Becca Montgomery is tied for the lead in the ODAC.

The team that falls in the game will play at 5 p.m., while the winner will play at 7 p.m.
