LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon in the WildCats' home doubleheader opener. The 'Cats made it a successful one as they swept the Pride with scores of 2-1 and 3-0.
The wins improve Randolph's record to 3-5 overall. Greensboro evens its record at 6-6.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between Randolph starter Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) and Greensboro's Cheyanne Cox. The Pride scored first with a run in the first inning to lead 1-0. The game remained that way until the Randolph sixth. Jordyn Knapp (Woodbridge,Va./C.D. Hylton) led off with a single to left. Kate Hodgkiss (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) reached on a throwing error by Cox that moved Knapp to third. Taylor Craft (Altavista, Va./Altavista) then lifted a high fly ball to right field that was caught for the out. Knapp tagged up and was able to beat the throw by sliding past the tag and the game was tied at 1-1. Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) struck out swinging for the second out. Lauren Morris (Troy, N.C./West Montgomery) stepped to the plate and laced a single through the left side of the field to score Hodgkiss and Randolph now had the lead 2-1.
It was almost a formality for Chaney in the seventh as she retired the first two batters. She did allow a double to Kaylee Johnson but struck out Cayleigh Norton for the final out of the game.
Chaney went the distance for the Cats as she scattered five hits over seven innings. She gave up one unearned run and one walk while striking out seven. Cox gave up two runs (one earned) and four hits and struck out six.
Becca Montgomery (Lancaster, S.C./E.A. Laney) had two of Randolph's hits. She also stole a base.
In the second game, Hodgkiss walked to lead off and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Knapp popped up to the pitcher, Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) singled up the middle to score Hodgkiss. Brittany Campbell (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) reached base on an error by the Pride shortstop. Montgomery flied out to center to score Harbison and give the WildCats a 2-0 lead.
A Knapp RBI double in the fourth made it 3-0 in favor of Randolph. Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) shutdown the Pride as she gave up four hits in the game with two coming in the final inning. She gave up just one walk while striking out two.
Montgomery picked up another two hits and brought in one run. Knapp had the game's only extra base hit.
