GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph softball team returned to action on Saturday as they faced Guilford in the ODAC opener for both teams. The Quakers plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead and held off the WildCats 6-4.
Guilford went ahead 2-0 after the first inning. Randolph got one run back in the second as Becca Montgomery (Lancaster, S.C./Laney) led off with a homerun to centerfield. The 'Cats tied the game at 2-2 on a Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) RBI single.
Guilford went ahead in the fifth on a Kailey Swaim two-run triple. Makayla Crawford's groundout scored a run and Anna Wolfe homered to center to give the home team a 6-3 advantage.
Montgomery walked to lead off the sixth inning and moved to second on a Brittany Campbell (Manasas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) groundout. Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) popped out to second base for the second out. Montgomery stole third and scored on an error by the Quaker pitcher to make it 6-4. The WildCats went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning to end the game.
Allen-Ingle went six innings and surrendered six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk. She struck out three.
Montgomery was 1-for-2 with a homerun, two runs scored, one run batted in, and one stolen base. She also helped throw out a runner at second base. Lee and Knapp both collected two hits each and a run scored.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended with the WildCats batting in the top of the first. No rescheduled date has been determined yet.
Randolph will next host Lynchburg this coming Thursday. Game one is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. with the second game to start at 5:00 p.m.
