EMORY, Va.- Randolph softball traveled to Emory and Henry to face the #25 ranked Wasps in an ODAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The WildCats picked up two wins with a sweep of E&H at a cold and windy Wasps Field.
The victories improve the 'Cats' record to 10-12 overall and 3-2 in the conference while Emory and Henry drops to 21-5 and 2-2 in the league. It is the first sweep of the Wasps by the Wildcats since 2014 and the first on E&H's home field since 2009.
Behind a two-homerun performance by Lauren Morris (Troy, N.C./West Montgomery), the Wildcats took the first game 7-2. Morris led off the second inning with a solo blast to left field to put Randolph on top 1-0. The Wasps tied it up on a Lyndsay Boyd RBI groundout in the bottom of the third.
In the WildCat fifth, Kate Hodgkiss (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) singled to get on base. Dianne Davis (Zuni, Va./Isle of Wright) was able to get on board on a dropped fly ball by the Wasp right fielder. Becca Montgomery (Lancaster, S.C./Laney) got on a fielder's choice with Hodgkiss getting tagged out at home plate. Morris then stepped up and after fouling off a few pitches, sent one over the left field fence for a grand slam to give the WildCats a 5-1 advantage. The 'Cats added to their lead in the sixth on a Davis two RBI single.
Morris batted 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Davis was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Jordyn Knapp (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) and Tiffany Allen (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) were 3-for-4.
Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) got the start in the circle. She scattered five hits over seven innings for the complete game win. She gave up two runs (one unearned), two walks, and struck out three.
In the second game, Randolph got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Craft singled in a run and Knapp followed with another RBI single. The Wasps got one run back to make it 2-1 after two innings.
Emory and Henry pushed a run across in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. In the WildCat sixth, Taylor Craft (Altavista, Va./Altavista) singled and advanced to second on the throw. Brandi Pruitt (Vernon Hill, Va./Chatham) pinch hit for Knapp and sacrificed bunted to advance Craft to third. Allen singled to score Craft and moved to second on a wild pitch. A Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) sac bunt moved Allen to third and she would score on Hodgkiss' single to give Randolph a 4-2 lead.
Emory and Henry scored once to make it 4-3. A Knapp RBI groundout in the seventh scored Montgomery. The Wasps got the leadoff runner on base in the bottom of the inning. A fielder's choice got that runner out and two straight lineouts ended the Wasp threat and the WildCats held on for the win.
Starting pitcher Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) had a season-best 10 strikeouts. She gave up three runs on nine hits and did not walk a batter.
Craft was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Montgomery stole a base and scored a run. Knapp hit 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Randolph returns home to host Eastern Mennonite for a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
