LYNCHBURG, Va.- Looking to gain some momentum after their sweep of Emory and Henry on Wednesday, the WildCat softball team hosted Eastern Mennonite on Friday afternoon. The Royals, however, had the upper hand on the 'Cats as they swept the doubleheader with scores of 9-4 and 5-2.
The losses drop Randolph's overall record to 10-14 and 3-4 in the ODAC. EMU improves to 15-9 and 3-5 in the conference.
In the first game, the Randolph bats were held in check for the first four innings. The Royals got out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play. The Wildcats were able to halve their deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Dianne Davis (Zuni, Va./Isle of Wright) two-RBI single.
Eastern Mennonite got a run back in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly. The Royals broke the game open in the seventh with a four-run inning to take a 9-2 lead. Randolph got a rally going in the bottom of the inning. Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) singled and then stole second base. Kate Hodgkiss (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) was hit by pitch. Davis came up and reached first on throwing error by the Royals and moved to second base, which allowed both Lucado and Hodgkiss to score. The WildCat rally stalled as Randolph picked up three straight outs to end the game.
Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) gave up nine runs (eight earned) in the circle. She walked three and struck out one.
Brittany Campbell (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) was a perfect 3-for-3 and also stole a base. Lucado was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
In the second game, Randolph was hitless through 3 1/3 innings until Davis singled in the fourth inning. EMU led 5-0 after six innings of play.
The 'Cats once again tried to get a rally going in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Jordyn Knapp (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) had a pinch-hit single and Lauren Morris (Troy, N.C./West Montgomery) followed with a pinch-hit single of her own to put runners in scoring position. Sarah Reed (Luray, Va./Luray) came to pinch run for Morris. Campbell laced a single to right field to bring home Knapp and Reed to make it a 5-2 contest. Alexis Steljes (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) grounded out to move Campbell to second. Tiffany Allen's (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) groundout ended the game.
Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) gave up seven hits, five runs (four earned) and four walks. She struck out six Royals. Campbell was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in.
Randolph will travel to Bridgewater to play the Eagles on Sunday. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
