WINCHESTER, Va.- Host Shenandoah scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and that was all it needed as it defeated Randolph 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats bounced back to claim the second game 8-5.
The split gives the 'Cats an overall record of 14-19 and a 7-9 mark in ODAC play. The Hornets move to 13-23 and 3-13 overall.
Shenandoah had runners on first and third with two outs. Maryann Hollen stole second and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt on Randolph catcher Becca Montgomery (Lancaster, S.C./Laney). That allowed Allie Schey to score. Hollen eventually scored to put the Hornets on top 2-0.
The WildCats struggled on offense as they failed to record an extra base hit. The 'Cats had a runner on third with one out in the bottom half of the first but two straight strikeouts stopped the scoring opportunity.
Randolph had a chance to score in the top of the seventh. Brittany Campbell (Manasasa, Va./Stonewall Jackson) singled with two outs recorded to put runners on first and second. Montgomery was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. The rally ended, however, as Tiffany Allen (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) lined out to end the game.
Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) took the loss in the circle as she scattered three hits through six innings. She walked five and struck out two Hornets. At the plate, she was 2-for-3. Lauren Morris (Troy, N.C./West Montgomery) was 2-for-2.
In the second game, leadoff batter Brandi Pruitt (Vernon Hill, Va./Chatham) reached first on an error and then stole second and third base to move into scoring position. After Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) struck out and Montgomery popped out, Morris doubled to left field to score Pruitt and put Randolph on the board 1-0.
Morris delivered for the WildCats again in the third inning on a RBI single. The 'Cats plated two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Kate Hodgkiss (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) and Pruitt to give Randolph a 4-0 lead.
The Hornets pushed three runs across in the bottom half of the fourth and tied the game in the fifth as Schey stole home. The WildCats broke the stalemate in the seventh with a four-run inning to leap ahead 8-4. Shenandoah got one run back in the bottom of the inning but Randolph starting pitcher Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) got the last two outs to secure the win.
Chaney went the distance for the 'Cats as she gave up just five hits, one earned run and one walk in seven innings. She struck out six.
Both Morris and Hodgkiss were 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Pruitt was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in. She swiped three bases. Montgomery had Randolph's other stolen base and was 2-for-4 at the plate.
The WildCats host #4 Randolph-Macon in the regular season finale for both teams this Tuesday. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m.
