SALEM, Va.- The Randolph softball team competed in the ODAC Tournament on Friday afternoon at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex. The WIldCats fell to Randolph-Macon 3-0 in their first game of the day and then dropped a 3-2 extra inning affair to Eastern Mennonite in the elimination game.
In first game, R-MC got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases for the Yellowjackets. A sacrifice fly by Haley Jones scored the game's first run. With Sami Davidon at the plate, WildCat catcher Becca Montgomery (Lancaster, S.C./E.A. Laney) tried to nab Candace Whittemore at third but threw past Randolph third baseman Brittany Campbell (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and the ball went into the outfield to allow Whittemore to score. Davidson would groundout and Shelby Hill lined out to end the inning.
Randolph managed five singles in the game. Randolph-Macon tacked on a run on a Savannah Wood RBI double in the fifth inning.
WildCat starting pitcher Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) gave up three runs on 10 hits. She struck out three Yellowjackets. She did not allow a walk for the fourth time this season.
Against EMU, it was scoreless until the top of the third inning. With two outs, Rachel Lee (Clifton, Va./Centreville) doubled down the left field line. Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) followed with a double of her own to score Lee and stake the 'Cats to a 1-0 advantage.
Randolph's lead did not last long. With two outs in the EMU portion of the third inning, Kelsi Martin doubled to score two runs and the score favored the Royals 2-1.
Randolph starting pitcher Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to keep Eastern Mennonite to a one-run lead. Still down 2-1 in the top of the seventh, the WildCats needed a rally to stay alive. Lauren Morris (Troy, N.C./West Montgomery) led off with a single and Allen-Ingle followed with a single to put runners on first and second base. Montgomery popped up to second base for the first out. Campbell laced a single to right center to score Kate Hodgkiss (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River). Pinch runner Blair Epperson (Nathalie, Va./William Campbell) was tagged at home for the second out and Allen grounded out to end the top of the seventh.
EMU could only muster a single in the bottom of the seventh as the game went into extra innings. In the Randolph eighth, Allen was placed on second. She would move to third on a Lee sacrifice bunt but Harbison's groundout prevented her from scoring.
In the Royals eighth, Madison Cash's sacrifice bunt moved Beck Hoskins to third. Tiffani Shaheen singled to get on base and Danielle Brennenman singled to score Hoskins and give EMU the walk off win.
Allen-Ingle went 7.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs on nine hits. She walked six and struck out two.
Lee was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Harbison finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run batted in.
Randolph ends the 2018 season with a final record of 14-23.
