SALEM, N.C.- The Randolph softball team began its 2019 season at the Salem College Tournament on Saturday. While its scheduled opener with the host Spirits was called off, the WildCats got their game in with Frostburg an hour later than planned. The wait didn't seem to bother the 'Cats as they defeated the Bobcats 10-4.
Randolph got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and led 4-0 after three innings of play. The Bobcats would counter with a four-run top of the third to tie the contest at 4-4.
The WildCats took the back the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the third which included a solo Hailey Thomas (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) homerun that was the first of her collegiate career. Three more runs would cross home plate in the sixth inning for Randolph.
Starting pitcher Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) went the distance for the 'Cats. She surrendered four runs on seven hits as she struck out eight and walked four batters.
Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) was a perfect 4-for-4 on the evening with a double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. She stole one base. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Blair Epperson (Nathalie, Va./William Campbell) was 1-for-3 in the leadoff spot with a pair of runs and a stolen base. Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) batted 1-for-2 with two runs and one run batted in.
Randolph and Frostburg face off again Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The WildCats end the day with Brandeis at 3:00 p.m.
