Softball Splits ODAC Doubleheader with Guilford

LYNCHBURG, Va.- Randolph softball was back on the field on Sunday afternoon as it hosted Guilford in an ODAC doubleheader. The Quakers took the first game 5-4 with the WildCats coming back and winning the second game 3-2.

In the first game, Guilford took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The score remained that way until the Randolph fifth when Alyssa Swords (Disputanta, Va./Prince George) singled home Rachel Lee (Clifton, Va./Centreville) to make it 3-1.

The Quakers tacked on two more runs in the sixth to go ahead 6-1. The 'Cats rallied in the bottom half of the inning. Nadia Tibbs (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) led off with a single followed by a Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) single. Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) reached on an error by Quaker centerfielder Natalie Conrad and the bases were loaded for pinch hitter Brittany Gula (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River). She smashed a double to left field to clear the bases and the WildCats closed to within a run of tying at 5-4. Randolph went down1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

Blair Epperson (Nathalie, Va./William Campbell) started in the circle and went two innings. She gave up three unearned runs on two hits and walked three while striking out one. Abbi Pannill (Prince George, Va./Prince George) pitched the last five innings and surrendered one earned run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Tibbs was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Taylor Craft (Altavista, Va./Altavista) batted 2-for-2. Hailey Thomas (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) and Gula had Randolph's extra base hits.

In the second game, the WildCats went ahead 1-0 in the third inning on a Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) sac fly to centerfield. Guilford plated two runs in the fourth inning to go up 2-1.

In the Randolph fifth, Swords led off with a single followed by Lee and Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry). Lucado flied out to right and Madison Brown (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) followed with a double to right field to score two runs and give the WildCats a 3-2 lead.

That was all that Pannill needed as she shut the Quakers down in the final two innings. She allowed two hits over that span and struck out the final Guilford batter to secure the WildCat victory.

Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) started and went three innings giving up two hits and striking out one batters. Shannon pitched an inning and gave up two runs on one hit and walked one. Pannill went the final three and gave up three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Harbison collected two hits. Nuckols batted 1-for-1 with a run scored and swiped two bases.

The WildCats host Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon. Game times will be at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
