LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team recognized its five graduating seniors on Sunday afternoon as the WildCats hosted Shenandoah. Four of those seniors played in role in Randolph 3-2 win over the Hornets in the first game.
The WildCats went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on Taylor Craft's (Altavista, Va./Altavista) RBI double. Later in the fourth, Hailey Thomas (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) singled to center field to bring home Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River). In the bottom of the fifth, Rachel Lee (Clifton, Va./Centreville) scored on a fielder's choice to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead.
Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) cruised through six innings as she allowed just three hits. She ran into some trouble in the seventh as she allowed a two-run homer to Shenandoah's Sierra Beaty, but picked up the last three outs to secure the win for the WildCats.
Chaney walked three and struck out six Hornets. She moves to 8-5 on the season.
Thomas was 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Lee scored a run and stole three bases. Lucado also scored once and swiped two bags.
In the second game, Shenandoah led 1-0 after three innings. In the Randolph fourth, Lucado reached first on an error by the Hornets shortstop and stole second. A wild pitch moved her to third base. Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) then doubled down the left field line to bring home Lucado to knot the game at 1-1.
A four-run fourth inning for SU broke the tie and gave the visitors a 5-1 lead. Randolph got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Nadia Tibbs (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) RBI triple. The sixth saw both teams exchange runs as the WildCats trailed 6-3 going into the seventh inning.
Shenandoah tallied three runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 10-3. Randolph went down 1-2-3 in the bottom part of the inning as the Hornets claimed the win.
Abbi Pannill (Prince George, Va./Prince George) took the lost for the 'Cats. She went 4.1 innings and gave up five runs on five hits, walking five, and striking out two. Chaney came in for relief in the final 2.2 innings and surrendered five runs on six hits, two walks, and struck out three.
Tibbs was 2-for-3 at the plate. Harbison went 2-for-2 with a double, a run batted in, and a stolen base. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) was hitless but scored a run and stole a base. Lucado also scored once and stole a base.
Randolph hosts Salem this Thursday in its final home doubleheader of the season. Game times are at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
