Strong first half for R-MC Downs WildCats

ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon College used a first-half run to defeat the Randolph College women's basketball team 80-42 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Saturday.

The hosts began the burst right from the beginning.  Taylor Samuels interrupted the run on two different occasions, but the Yellow Jackets got out to an 18-4 lead.  Alexis Calloway made a nice play down low, but R-MC extended the lead.  Lauren Moore hit a late layup, but it was answered by the hosts near the end of the period.

Korin Harris helped cut into the deficit at the start of the second.  She hit two from the charity stripe before knocking down an and-one.  Randolph-Macon responded with an 8-1 run (Daijah Johnson hit a free throw), which was ended by a traditional three-point play from Calloway.  However, the Yellow Jackets used one final run to go into the half with a 42-20 lead.

Kiana Scott and Jacqueline Hockman responded to an early basket by the hosts, but R-MC used another burst to push the lead further.  Despite baskets by Samuels, Moore, and Kalyn Banks, the Yellow Jackets took a commanding lead into the fourth.

Banks and Samuels hit early shots in the fourth.  Darian Thornton added another four in the period, while Scott and Camille Gallagher added two, but Randolph-Macon earned the win.

Samuels paced the WildCats with eight points, while Calloway and Banks both grabbed six rebounds.  Kelly Williams led the Yellow Jackets (10-8 overall, 5-5 ODAC) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Randolph (9-10, 4-6) returns home for its next contest.  The WildCats will welcome Hollins University (4-14, 0-10) to the RAD Center on Wednesday night.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
