LYNCHBURG, Va.- Randolph women's lacrosse outscored visiting Wartburg 9-4 in the second half and nearly pulled off a comeback but ultimately fell short as the Knights won by the score of 14-13 at WildCat Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The WildCats fall to 0-3 while the Knights improve to 2-1.
The Knights scored the game's first goal just over three minutes in. Randolph picked up a Knights' turnover and was able to make good as Sarah Perry (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) scored off an assist from Dana Cavallo (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) at 24:30.
Wartburg jumped ahead with six unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead with 12:41 remaining in the first half. The 'Cats tallied twice on goals from Hannah Bradley (Wye Mills, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) and Perry to get to 7-3. The Knights would go on to outscore the WildCats 3-1 the rest of the period to take a 10-4 lead at the break.
In the second half, Randolph came out quickly with two scores. Rachel Buxton (Sterling, Va.) capitalized on a free position shot and Bradley scored right after the draw control in a span of 12 seconds. Wartburg got one back on a free position goal but the WildCats added another free position goal from Buxton and a Perry solo shot to make it 11-8. Wartburg started to pull away with three goals to lead 14-8 with 16:43 remaining.
The WildCats called a timeout to regroup. With less than 13 minutes to play, Perry found Cavallo for the goal and nine seconds later, Buxton broke through to make it 14-10. The score would remain that way for over 10 minutes of game time as both defenses held firm.
With 2:35 to play in the contest, Randolph forced a Wartburg turnover and Perry picked up the groundball. She raced to the goal and deposited it into the back of the net to get the 'Cats to within three scores. The WildCats won the draw control and Buxton scored again to get Randolph to within two of tying. Nicole Dorton (Alexandria, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) took the draw control and was granted a free position shot with 39 seconds left. She made good and it was suddenly a one-goal game. Dorton again won the following draw control and the Wildcats looked to score the equalizer but Perry was forced into a turnover with the clock winding down and Wartburg scooped up the loose ball as the game ended.
The first year pair of Perry and Buxton combined for nine goals on the day. Perry had five and Buxton four. Bradley scored twice with Cavallo and Dorton also getting a goal each. Bradley had a team-high seven groundballs. Dorton won 13 of Randolph's 18 draw controls. Chrissy Shackleford (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) finished with 15 saves.
