LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team captured its third consecutive match in three days as the WildCats took down visiting Averett University, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Randolph Tennis Courts.
Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Aubrey Hawn (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) trailed their opponents in first doubles but managed to send the match into a tiebreaker. Unfortunately the pair would fall 9-8 (7-2), giving the Cougars their lone doubles victory.
The tandem of Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) and Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) took two doubles, 8-3, while Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) would team up in third doubles to win, 8-1.
In singles action, Jin had the WildCats' second loss of the day as she fell to Heidi Sarkkinen, 6-2, 6-3 in first singles. Schmitz took care of Hannah Mattson, 6-1, 6-2 at #2 singles while Hawn defeated Eleanor Crane in third singles, 6-1, 6-0. Appel won #4, 6-1, 6-1 against Carolyne Dunn while Mueller earned a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Ashley Thornton #5 and Opoku-Sarfo took down Tyler Goad, 6-1, 6-1 at #6.
The WildCats jump to 5-3 overall and look to continue their winning streak when they travel to conference rival Guilford College on Saturday, March 31 for a 12 p.m. start.
