HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Randolph College women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches on the first day of its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. The WildCats fell to Wilkes University, 7-2, before dropping an 8-1 decision to Milligan College on Sunday.
Match 1: Wilkes 7, Randolph 2
The WildCats fell in all three doubles matches but won two of six singles matches in the 7-2 loss to Wilkes University.
Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) earned the win at No. 1 with a score of 6-3, 6-4, while Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) took the second win for Randolph in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-0. Savana Mata () fell at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1 while Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) dropped a 6-4, 6-4, decision at No. 4. Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) tried to push the No. 5 singles match into a tie breaker but ultimately fell to her opponent, 6-0, 7-5 while Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson) fell in the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-1.
Jin and Appel teamed up for No. 1 doubles but would drop a hard fought, 8-5, decision to their opponents while Schmitz and Mata fell, 8-4, in the No. 2 spot. Wikes completed the doubles sweep taking down the tandem of Underwood and Opoku-Sarfo, 8-0.
Match 2: Milligan 8, Randolph 1
Although Milligan managed to win all three doubles matches, the WildCats did not make it easy for them. The tandem of Jin and Appel fell in the No. 1 spot, 8-6, while the duo of Mata and Schmitz dropped the No. 2 match that also ended with a score of 8-6. Opoku-Sarfo paired up with Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) in the No. 3 spot where they fell to their opponents, 8-2.
In singles action, Jin snatched the only win as the junior took the No. 1 match with a score of 6-1, 6-0. Schmitz's No. 2 match was pushed to a tie breaker where she ultimately fell, 6-2, 2-6, 6-10, while Mata fell in the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-0. Appel dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the No. 4 match while Opoku-Sarfo fell at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0 and Underwood fell at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.
The WildCats drop to 2-5 and are back tomorrow to play Moravian at 2:30 p.m.
