ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) decision to host Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon at the Banks Tennis Center.
Keyu Jin (Kuming, China/No. 8 Middle School) won the lone match for Randolph, clinching the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-7 (7-4), 10-5 after being forced into a tie-breaker. Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) also pushed her match to a tie-breaker but was edged out by her opponent, 1-6, 6-3, 13-15 in the No. 2 spot.
Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) dropped her match at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4, while Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) fell, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot. After dropping her first set, 6-2, in the No. 5 match, Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) made a comeback in her second set but would end up falling 7-5, while Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) would take a 6-2, 6-2 defeat in the No. 6 match.
The YellowJackets claimed all three doubles matches. The tandem of Jin and Schmitz put up a tough fight at the No. 1 spot, forcing a tie-breaker, but the pair was unable to hold off their opponents who took the win, 8-7 (7-4). Mueller and Mata teamed up at No. 2 doubles where they fell with a score of 8-4 while Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson County) dropped an 8-0 decision at No. 3.
The WildCats drop to 10-7, 8-3 ODAC and will close out their regular season on Friday, April 19 when they head to Shenandoah University for a 1 p.m conference match-up.
