Throwers Lead the Way for 'Cats at ODACs

SALEM, VA – The Randolph College women's indoor track and field team competed at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Indoor Championships on Sunday.  Led by the throwers, the WildCats finished eighth with 15 points.  Bridgewater College defended its title, winning at Roanoke College.

Headlining the throwers group was Trevanna Berryman.  The first year competed in both the weight throw and her top event, shot put.  In the weight throw, she posted a heave of 35'2", which was good for eighth place.  She added eight more points and her first collegiate medal in the shot put.  She finished with the silver after tossing the shot 37'10", just barely missing out on a gold.

Her teammate Teliya Stevenson was nearly as good, just in reverse of Berryman's events.  Stevenson took eighth in the shot put with a new career-best.  The throw of 35'5" gave the team a point.  In the weight throw, she came out and heaved a season-best of 38'7.75".  It was good for fifth in the event.

The short distance sprinters also had outstanding days.  Jordan Sheets kept her momentum going, and once again set new career-bests in the 60- and 200-meter dashes.  She ran 8.59 in the 60, taking 11th overall.  She was even better in the 200, breaking 28 seconds for the first time this year.  Her time of 27.76 was seven-tenths faster than her previous best and gave her eighth overall, giving her a point in her first meet.  Jalil Penn was right behind in the 60, adding a PR in a time of 8.60.  She also just missed out on a new best in the 200, by a mere one one-hundredth of a second.

Michaela Saunders competed in the 800-meter race and set a new facility-personal best, going 2:52.07.

With the end of the indoor meet, the WildCats will begin preparations for the outdoor season.  It begins on March 17 at Washington and Lee University.
