LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (18-25, 15-25, 21-25) Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) heartbreaker to visiting Roanoke College on Tuesday evening in the RAD Center.
Despite an 8-5 edge early on in the opening set, the WildCats soon saw their lead disappear as the Maroons landed point after point to make it a 14-all score. Roanoke pulled ahead two points later, forcing Randolph into a timeout, but coming out of the break, the Maroons continued their offensive attack to ultimately win set one, 25-18.
The second set saw the Maroons storm ahead to a 12-6 advantage and never look back as they cruised to an easy 25-15 win.
Randolph fought back in the third frame, pushing an 8-0 run for a comfortable 10-4 lead. However, the Maroons responded shortly after with a 4-0 burst of their own, slicing the deficit to 10-8. The WildCats were able to maintain their lead a little longer until a 4-0 spurt placed Roanoke ahead, 16-14. The score would go on to tie several times, with the dust settling at 21-all before the Maroons made their move off with a 4-0 run to capture the set win and the match victory.
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) recorded five kills for the WildCats while Shelby Bergum (Terrebonne, Ore./Redmond), Rebecca Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn./Sullivan Central), and Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) tallied four kills apiece. Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) and Taylor Webb each notched 12 digs for the defense while Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) distributed 16 assists for the night.
