SALEM, Va. – The Randolph College volleyball team fell in straight sets (13-25, 17-25, 15-25) to host and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Roanoke College on Tuesday evening.
Although the Maroons held a 5-3 edge over Randolph in the opening set, the WildCats kept Roanoke within striking distance until the Maroons made an 8-2 run to storm ahead to a comfortable 16-9 margin. The WildCats fought hard to decrease the point gap but would only slice the score to 24-13, capitalizing off a Roanoke service error, before the Maroons landed the set winning point shortly after.
Roanoke managed to grab the lead in the second set, pushing ahead to 5-1, before Randolph pushed a 5-2 run to trim the deficit to 7-6. The WildCats were able to keep the score close at 10-9 before the Maroons rallied with six unanswered points to extend their lead to 16-9. Roanoke's advantage built to an 18-11 tally but Randolph immediately responded a 6-0 push of its own to trim the deficit to 18-17. However, it would be the closest the WildCats would get as the Maroons sealed their second set victory on a 7-0 run.
The final set saw Randolph take a brief 5-4 edge over the Maroons, capitalizing on two Roanoke attack errors, but Roanoke made quick work of taking back the lead off a 5-1 burst. The WildCats rallied with three unanswered points to level the score to 9-all, but were soon plagued by attack errors which opened the door for Roanoke to take a 15-9 lead. Despite the WildCats' best efforts to climb out of the point gap, the Maroons launched an offensive assault, widening their margin to 19-11. Randolph slowly chipped away at Roanoke's lead, eventually cutting it to 23-15, but the Maroons would ultimately claim the 25-15 set win to clinch the match.
Rebecca Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn./Sullivan Central) led the Randolph offense with eight kills while Autumn Troxell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) chipped in six. Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) led the defense with 13 digs, to go along with four kills, while Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) recorded 11 digs. Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) dished out 15 assists in the loss.
Randolph moves to 5-11, 2-3 ODAC and is back on the court when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday, Oct. 5 for a 6:30 p.m. conference match-up.
