Guilford Downs WildCats, 3-1

Autumn Troxell goes for the attack

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Randolph College volleyball team fell to host Guilford College, 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 17-25, 22-25) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match up on Wednesday evening in the Ragan Brown Field House.

Randolph held a 5-1 advantage in the open set but soon saw its lead diminish as the Quakers closed the gap on a 5-0 run. The score would remain tight before Guilford grabbed an 11-8 edge, forcing Randolph into a timeout. Coming out of the break, the WildCats drilled a 4-0 run to jump ahead, 12-11, but the Quakers rallied with six unanswered points to take back the lead once more. Guilford extended its lead to 23-16 but called for a timeout as Randolph trimmed the deficit to 23-20 off three consecutive service aces. Guilford would ultimately take the set, 25-21, capitalizing on a Randolph service error.

The WildCats launched an offensive assault in the second set that saw them grab a commanding 9-3 lead before extending its advantage all the way to 19-12, forcing the Quakers into a timeout. Despite the Quakers best efforts, Randolph sealed the 25-16 tally off kills by Autumn Troxell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) and Kennedy Moulton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).

Despite a close score in the third set, Guilford capitalized on several Randolph errors to take the lead, pushing its advantage all the way to 18-8. After a brief timeout called by the WildCats, Randolph began to slowly chip away at Guilford's lead, trimming the deficit to 24-17 but it wouldn't be enough as the Quakers clinched the 25-17 win to hand them a 2-1 match lead.

Although Randolph would take a 6-3 edge over the Quakers in the fourth set, a 4-0 push by Guilford placed it ahead with a slim 8-6 margin. The WildCats called for a timeout to regroup and coming out the break, Randolph was able to cut the score to 11-10, but a 6-2 push by the Quakers extended their margin to 17-12. The WildCats fought their back, managing to level the score to 20-all before taking the lead off a Guilford attack error. Meghan Chaffins (Temperanceville, Va./Holly Grove Christian) dished out a kill to make it a 22-20 score in Randolph's favor, but a 5-0 burst by Guilford handed the Quakers the 25-22 set win to seal the match.

Troxell recorded a team-high 15 kills to go along with 12 digs and five service aces. Rebecca Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn./Sullivan Central) tallied three service aces for the WildCats and tallied eight kills. Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) also notched eight kills in the loss while Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) dished out 22 assists. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) distributed 13 assists in the match while Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) led defensively with 18 digs.

Randolph drops to 6-14, 2-5 ODAC and is home on Friday, Oct. 12 when it hosts N.C. Wesleyan College and William Peace College in a non-conference double-header. First match is set for 5:30 p.m.
